What Can You Do to Help a Pill Addict?

Question by Rachell: What can you do to help a pill addict?
A very close relative of mine has a severe pill addiction. He takes high dosage morphine every single day along with soma and anti-anxiety medication. He has major health issues; has had many strokes and heart attacks in his life time and is living off of his retirement and disability from the government. He has had issues receiving his prescriptions from different pharmacists in town and he blames them and gets angry at them, even though they are just doing their job and not giving him pills before he’s allowed to get the next prescription filled…

He’s out of certain pills right now, but he is married to a woman who enables him beyond belief.. she is also a pill addict and takes pretty much the same exact pills. When they first met each other she actually introduced him to her “pain specialist” and that started him on this path… about 3 years ago.

I am pretty sure there is nothing I can do to help this person and normally I’d say “it’s their life”, if they want to ruin it with pills, so be it… but this person is very dear to me and I am getting tired of sitting by and pretending nothing is wrong, when I know for a fact there is a lot wrong.

Is there anything I can do, aside from calling him out and losing my relationship with him. He will lose his mind and become evil if I tell him I think he has a problem… I just don’t want that to happen.. is there any legal things I can do, like tell all the local pharmacists about his problem.. or call his doctor and ask her to stop prescribing him these pills… or what. I’m at a loss.

Since a doctor is overseeing this, I’m afraid there’s not a lot you can do.

This is actually very common. If someone is connected with a doctor with ongoing opiate supplies, that person is *probably* going to choose their addiction over most anything. Sorry, but it is true.
