The state of Mississippi has a pretty impressive record as it relates to alcohol and illicit drug use. They are amongst the 10 states that have the lowest rates of a past month illicit drug use, past month marijuana use, past year marijuana use, past year cocaine use, pass year use of non-medical use pain relievers, past month alcohol use and binging. They also have the greatest perception of risk associated with having 5 or more alcoholic beverages once or twice a week. This means that not only do they engage less in illicit drug use and alcohol use and binging but they also think negatively about binge drinking more so then the general population in the United States.
There does however continue to be some alcohol drug use and abuse problems in Mississippi. There is drug and alcohol use. It is just when compared to other states in America they rank pretty low. However, past year drug dependence and abuse in 2005 and 2006 was ranked amongst the top 10 states in the age group of 26 and older. This is a concern for Mississippi alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers and a problem they will have to deal with as when it comes to treating these individuals and helping them get clean.
There are only 112 drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers in Mississippi with the majority of them being nonprofit and private. Ten percent are for-profit and private while the remaining 47 centers are either operated or owned by either the local, state and Federal government. This last figure is pretty impressive. Generally, it is rare to see nearly half of a state’s rehabilitation facilities owned by the government. However, it does speak to the fact that those that govern Mississippi are very involved and serious about helping people get off of drugs.
Seventy-percent of all Mississippi drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers do offer outpatient care. Thirty-five percent of them have residential care. There is only one opioid treatment and maintenance program in the State but there are six programs and 70 physicians who do treat opiate addiction with buprenorphine. As you see, this is the preferred method of treatment for this particular class drugs. Sixty-five percent of all of the Mississippi drug and rehab facilities do receive money from governmental agencies, which makes them affordable because care is subsidized. There are more than 30 facilities that have a contract or agreement with management care organizations to provide treatment and services through one’s insurance company.
A one day census by the N-SSATS found that on a single day there were 5912 individuals in Mississippi drug and/or alcohol rehab with over 4000 of them being in outpatient care. Five percent were younger then 18 years of age.
Over the past decade there has been steady decrease in the amount of individuals who enter rehab for alcohol abuse. Conversely, there has been an increase for those who need treatment for heroine and methamphetamine. The trend involving methamphetamines increase in use and also admission for rehabilitation help has been a pretty common in many of the states across America.
