The state of Georgia has some of the lower incidences of drug use in America. For pass month marijuana use in the age group 12-17, they rank amongst the lowest 10 states. The same holds true for past year cocaine use amongst those 18 through 25, past month alcohol use for individuals 12-17, 12-20, 18-25 and for past month binge alcohol use in age groups 12-12, 12-20 and 18-25. There does seem to be a relaxed view of the drug marijuana though, the negative perception of risk associated with smoking marijuana once in a month in age groups 12 and older, 18-25 and those older then 26 is extremely low.

Overall, Georgia alcohol abuse and dependency rates tend to be at or lower then the national average, primarily in two age groups, those 18-25 and those 12 -17. The same holds true for drug abuse and dependence over the past year. Those 12 and older, between 12 and 17 and 18-25 are at or lower then the natural averages. However, for individuals 26 and older, their past year drug dependence is higher then the national average.

In 2006, 277 Georgia alcohol and drug rehab facilities existed. Thirty-percent of these were non-profit and private. Twenty-seven were for-profit and private. Nearly 80 alcohol and drug rehab centers in Georgia were operated by the state. The vast majority of these, 80%, offer various types of care with outpatient being one of them.

Twenty-seven percent of facilities provide residential care. Thirty-two offer help for opioid addiction. More than 200 doctors operate in 20 treatment facilities where Buprenorphine therapy is available to those addicted to opiates.

More then half of Georgia’s alcohol and drug abuse facilities receive monies from the local, county, state or federal government, which tends to lower rehab costs. One hundred and eighteen of these facilities have some type of contract or agreement to work with managed cared organizations that make care available to those addicted to alcohol and drugs in Georgia.

In eight years, the number of individuals who were either admitted to residential care or who were receiving some sort of alcohol or drug treatment in Georgia, rose from 30,000 to 45,000. Those who went to seek help solely for alcohol abuse has decreased over the past 14 years while there has been an increase in those needing help for methamphetamines and marijuana. Drug only admissions have increased 25% in the last seven years while alcohol only admissions have decreased 45% over a period of 13 years.

There are more then 200 alcohol and drug rehabilitation facilities in Georgia. Most of them offer an outpatient treatment option. This is typically ideal for individuals that are unable to take a long leave of absence from work or who can’t afford full time care. It is important to make these types of considerations prior to choosing a rehab facility. The rehabilitation center must fit your specific needs and lifestyle.
