Question by Eggggpie: Does the line under the newspaper headline need to end in a period?
It is not common that you would see a line under the headline of a newspaper that explains a little further of what the content of the article is about. However, I must include one in my article for an English assignment but I’m not sure whether I need to end it off with a period or not:
“Transplant recipient dies from liver failure after alcohol abuse”

I guess you mean the sub-heading.
Headlines and subs are NOT punctuated except for colons, thus
“Miller to Unions : Drop Dead”

The institutes on alcohol abuse are great initiative that promotes & supports against alcoholism and strives to spread the health benefits for all. Alcoholism abuse is growing at a great pace. The life style today is so stressful that people tend to get to the easy resort of consuming alcohol and drugs. The time is such that not only the colleges, but the school kids are not untouched by the alcohol and drugs. Looking at the need, there are various centers offering help and treatments. Such institutes have become quite dense. The sole reason of such centers is to simply control and cure alcoholism. Having said that it really doesn’t matter how many of such centers are inaugurated, till the time people themselves does not realize that alcohol and drug could not only deteriorate their health, but would also ruin their family life. There are many initiatives taken at national level as well like by the national institute on alcohol abuse and alcoholism to control and provide treatments free or at subsidized cost, the only endeavor being saving the society from the clutches of alcoholism abuse.
As a responsible individual, one must contribute by shouldering the responsibility of checking for alcohol addicts in once own vicinity. Small contributions such as directing people to alcohol treatments, making them understand the real endeavor of such initiates and moreover, motivating the non-alcoholics to support individuals who are addicted rather than think of them as a taboo. This would really make a difference. One national institute on alcoholism and alcoholism despite doing its best can’t make a change in the society; it is us who would take small steps to eliminate alcohol abuse with a broader vision of help & support to such addicts. Understanding the people, who have gotten into the vicious circle of alcoholism, by extending love and care instead of treating them as untouchables, could be certain small steps that could help the victims of alcoholism abuse go a long way – by the end of which, they would gain the same respect and social status that they had before being addicted.
Alcohol treatments would help the addicts to get rid of the addiction but it is our responsibility to give these addicts an environment of support & motivation which would help then to rebuild their identity. The science of health and treatment of alcoholism abuse could be prevented by –
Spreading awareness around the biological behaviors & functioning related to alcohol abuse.
Improvising the quality of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of alcoholism.
Promoting better health care.

For the past several months, the daily economic news has been grim. We hear about more job losses, foreclosures, home sales down, food prices soar, the stock market goes up and down. These are extraordinarily difficult times for everyone, and in some way everyone is affected by the situation. The never-ending stress taps into your energy and saps your strength; it tests your faith and leaves you confused. Families without the added stressors of alcohol or drugs will pull together; they will make some sacrifices as they grumble and complain, but in the end these families will more than likely survive the current economy.
What about the alcoholic? More importantly, what about the children living with an alcoholic? Research has confirmed that alcoholics lack coping skills. When faced with problems, the alcoholic will turn to the bottle. Most of us have seen the destructive dysfunction that results from alcohol or drug abuse. What happens when the alcoholic faces a job loss or pay cut, or loses the important health insurance? These situations exceed the “normal” stress of life and will most likely find the alcoholic turning to the bottle more often and in larger quantities.
The National Runaway Switchboard has reported that there has been an alarming increase in calls over the past year. The callers have been increasingly younger. These victims have reported abuse and neglect with alcohol a common denominator in many cases. With the increased stress from the economy, there has been an increase in alcohol and drug abuse. With increased alcohol and drug abuse, we have seen more violent outbursts. The sad result has been child abuse and neglect. Unfortunately, the weak economy has also reduced the funding for shelters and self-help organizations.
As we all know, eventually there will be more jobs and stocks will go up. We can all go eat lobster and see a movie. The economy will bounce back and up! In the interim, we need to ask ourselves a question: what about the children living in alcoholic homes during these tough times? Will their self-esteem ever be restored? What are the permanent lasting affects on these future leaders? We all need to be aware of the far reaching affects of a “bad” economy. Recent research indicated that children of alcoholics not only risk becoming an alcoholic but are more likely to abuse drugs.
We must pay attention to friends and family members that may need some extra help, and possibly intervention, during this tough time. Teachers, church leaders and adults that come in contact with children, stay watchful and pay attention to children that may be living in an alcoholic home. The turmoil in an alcoholic home can create guilt, shame and confusion for the children. These children try desperately to keep this ugly family secret, yet more than anything they need a trusted adult that will listen to them. Encouragement and support will begin their journey on the road to recovery.
We are all in this together, and we need to help each other. If we turn our backs on these children in need, the economy will recover but a huge segment of our society will not.

A number of newer modalities are now becoming fairly common in addiction treatment. Florida, as has so often been the case, is a recognized leader in the delivery of some of these therapies.
The importance of physical fitness is now being stressed in addiction treatment. Florida rehab facilities offer strength training, cardiovascular endurance, water sports, and other activities in order to encourage the improvement in overall health during drug and alcohol rehabilitation and provide a foundation for future holistic health.
Ropes courses, a normal part of a supervised physical fitness regimen, have been used for some time in addiction treatment. Florida offers excellent topography and a fine climate for what has become an accepted, proven method for restoring self-esteem and building self-confidence.
Ropes courses are obstacle courses with climbing walls, horizontal beams and cables, swiveling bridges, numerous swings, zip lines, and water elements scattered along a gentle path through the woods.
While clients should be in fair shape to participate, courses are designed with fitness levels in mind. Safety is always the top priority in addiction treatment. Florida rehab facilities provide guides and trainers for added security.
Martial arts, such a tai chi and qi gong, are often taught in addiction treatment. Florida rehab programs may also offer yoga. All of these activities teach proper breathing techniques, healthy postures, gentle stretches, slow purposeful movements, and mental focus. Tai chi has even been referred to as “meditation in motion.”
Nutritional counseling has become an integral component of addiction treatment. Florida rehab facilities may provide group and individual sessions with registered dieticians and other specially trained medical personnel. Poor eating habits are sometimes early symptoms of drug and alcohol abuse. These become ingrained and must be dealt with, especially with the growing knowledge about the relationship of diet and diseases.
It’s been discovered that grief and feelings of loss account for a large amount of the anguish felt by those seeking addiction treatment. Florida rehab facilities have begun to provide grief counseling for those clients also attempting to recover from the death of a loved one, a divorce, job loss, geographic changes, educational dysfunction, even the absence of the client’s drug-of-choice.
Gender-specific group therapy has become a routine part of addiction treatment. Florida drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs have discovered the unique needs women in particular may bring with them into the treatment setting.
Chemically dependent females are far more likely than their male counterparts to have been victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse, to have been tortured mentally or physically, and they often put off treatment because of a belief that they are needed in their often multiple roles of wife, daughter, mother, housekeeper, caregiver, or increasingly, breadwinner.
Statistically, if a woman has experienced any sort of abuse, it’s likely to have come from a male. There are, of course, exceptions.
By separating the sexes, it normally gives women a safe environment to discuss all sorts of familial or personal relationship difficulties without the sometimes upsetting presence of men.

Let’s take a look at some of these signs and symptoms, and the steps necessary to stop the abuse of alcohol.
Alcohol is a part of many people’s lives. Most restaurants serve alcoholic beverages and it is present at most sporting events and office parties. Many people can have a drink or two and stop there with no problem at all. For many people however, this is not the case. One drink can quickly lead to many more and some people simply do not have the ability to control their alcohol consumption. Studies have shown that people that come from an alcoholic family, have an increased risk of becoming problem drinkers. This leads us to believe that genetics plays some role in this addictive process. Stress is also a leading factor in one’s ability to control their consumption of alcohol. Many people turn to the bottle as a way to manage the stress that is present in their lives. Unfortunately, alcohol cannot make these problems disappear, they are still present and often drinking creates new problems. Many family members simply cannot take the up and down roller coaster ride of living with someone who is a problem drinker or an alcoholic. These families may have financial difficulties due to the alcoholic missing work or being fired from their job due to drinking. Abuse is prevalent in many homes where alcoholism exists, because the person drinking is unable to control their behavior while drinking. Many affable people have completely different personalities once they begin to drink. Just because someone has a problem with alcohol, it does not mean that they cannot recover and lead a full, normal life. It is important to recognize the symptoms of alcohol abuse, so that help for the addiction can be obtained before it is too late.
The following are a list of things that may indicate you or someone you care about has a problem with alcohol.
l. Withdrawing from friends and family.
2. A preoccupation with obtaining alcohol.
3. Numerous failed attempts to quit drinking.
4. Unexplained swings in moods or strange behavior.
5. Blaming others for problems or the ability to be unable to quit drinking.
6. Anger or depression.
Alcohol addiction can also have many different physical symptoms as well. The following things are a list of some of them.
1. Redness and puffiness of the face or eyes.
2. Abdominal pain.
3. Sick or shaking feeling, especially when not drinking.
4. Driving while intoxicated, this may result in legal troubles.
5. An increased tolerance to alcohol, and the need to drink more to feel the “buzz”.
6. Periods of not being able to remember things or conversations, “blackout” periods.
7. Flushing of the skin from an excessive intake of alcohol.
8. Missing school or work due to hangovers or periods of being intoxicated.
If you or someone you know, has any of these symptoms it is important to get help right away. There are many people who have conquered their alcohol addiction and have went on to lead happy, healthy lives.

Question by J.: Would a standard medical (not issued for court prosecution) blood detect drug and alcohol abuse?
I have a very minor problem with a leaky valve, and the doctor wants to do a blood test tomorrow for it. However, I stupidly partied last night with alcohol and vew vicodin pills. Will the panel that the doctor orders indicate any such “abuse”? Thanks.
